Discover the RARe research infrastructure in video!

CRB-Anim is the animal pillar of the RARe infrastructure which brings together the agronomic Biological Resource Centres (BRCs). Discover this infrastructure in all its scientific, organisational and human dimensions, with the contribution of the national Cryobank and CRB @BRIDGe.

RARe aims to preserve and characterise biological and genetic resources of animal, plant, microbial species and the environment, to contribute to the evolution of agricultural systems in response to global change.

Research institutions and their partners (INRAE, CIRAD, IRD, CNRS, universities, grandes écoles) have organised themselves to preserve this diversity, both in metropolitan France and in the overseas territories. The infrastructure is organised into five pillars, distinguished by the biological nature of the resources and the purpose of the research using them: Environment, Forest, Plants, Animals and Microorganisms.

RARe is now an important mechanism that brings together a wide range of resources:

  • 20,000 strains of micro-organisms
  • 15,000 soil samples
  • 220,000 plant varieties
  • 1,000,000 species of insects and live populations of Trichogramma
  • 70,000 animals of about 20 species
  • 10,000 varieties of forest trees

Biological resource centres enrich existing collections and develop technologies to better conserve and characterise them. They allow the study of population evolution and offer the possibility of introducing or reintroducing biodiversity into breeding, farming and forestry systems. The collections are enriched through research activities. These resources, which are known and secure, are included in catalogues, which will enable them to be distributed to scientific teams or professionals.
RARe relies on a large number of researchers, engineers and technicians whose day-to-day work you will discover in the video.
