The kick-off of the H2020 SCALA-MEDI project took place on September 7

The kick-off of the H2020 SCALA-MEDI project gathered the 17 European partners for the launch of this project whose objective is the Improvement of the sustainability and quality of sheep and poultry productions by the enhancement of the adaptation potential of local breeds in the MEDIterranean area. The development of animal biobanks supported by CRB-Anim is included in the project with a deliverable on the status of collections and a proposal for networking biobanks between the 3 North African countries.

CRB-Anim is involved in the development of the new FAO guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources.

FAO is currently preparing new guidelines on cryopreservation of animal genetic resources. These guidelines will update the 2012 edition in the light of recent developments in the field of gene banking, including those resulting from the EU-funded IMAGE project coordinated by INRAE, in which FAO was a partner.

Genomic characterization of local pig breeds and their seeds stored in the National Cryobank

In this study, the genome of six local French pig breeds was characterized from a sampling of recent animals and CBN stored seeds. Recommendations for the use of CBN material could be made to take into account the genomic inbreeding and halothane genotype of the animals that produced the seeds, as well as the few traceability errors of the oldest CBN doses.

Rationalizing ex situ collection of reproductive materials for endangered livestock breed

Improvements in ex situ storage of genetic and reproductive materials offer an alternative for endangered livestock breed conservation, but collections should be optimized cost-effectively to avoid duplication, and with reference to the sustainability of in situ breeds.

Interest of rabbit-induced pluripotent stem cells for the conservation of this species.

To maintain the biodiversity of a given species, it is essential to develop cryopreservation techniques to conserve the genetic resources of that species in the long term. This can be done by storing embryos, male or female gametes, or somatic tissues.

A multi-scale study of bovine sperm methyloma reveals conserved elements between species, but also particularities of the bovine genome.

While bull semen is a widely distributed product in the artificial insemination market, there is little data on DNA methylation in bovine sperm. However, the sperm methyloma is the result of epigenetic reprogramming that began as early as fetal life, and plays an essential role in the compaction of chromatin and the protection of the paternal genetic heritage.

A world first for the protection of wild and domestic donkey breeds

Inra researchers, in collaboration with IFCE, CNRS and Université François Rabelais de Tours, have just developed for the first time a technique for in vivo collection of donkey oocytes that can now be used routinely. They also studied the chronology of the in vitro maturation of these oocytes. Published in Theriogenology, their work represents crucial advances in the conservation of the genetic heritage of endangered donkey breeds.
